BSH and IFTTT – Offering the very best solutions for the Internet of Things

Imagine if every time your washing cycle ended the lights in your living room blinked? This and many other creative solutions have been made possible with IFTTT – our official Home Connect partner! Here, Daniel Johannisborg explains.

Daniel Johannisborg works for BSH as a Project Leader in Global Digital Transition, he is responsible for our connectivity projects such as the Home Connect Developer Program and the integration of IFTTT. We sat down with him to find out more about IFTTT and how it uses the Internet of Things to help our consumers in their homes.

What exactly is IFTTT?

IFTTT or If This Then That, is an official Home Connect partner. It is a service which allows the consumer to connect and control their Home Connect fitted appliances within their own personal Internet of Things. The name – If This Then That refers to the fact that with IFTTT the consumer can use an applet to trigger a certain response from their appliances if something specific happens, with ‘this’ being the trigger and ‘that’ the reaction. For example, every time the Home Connect fitted washer finishes a cycle it is logged on a spreadsheet, so that over time consumers can calculate their energy savings. This is just one of the countless personalized applets available.

What was the collaboration between BSH and IFTTT like?

IFTTT was an attractive partner for us, because it offers such an attractive Internet of Things service which is accessible globally on iOS, Android and the website, and has a huge array of really exciting partners on board. (For the full list, see the IFTTT website). So far, the collaboration between BSH and IFTTT, has been very smooth and uncomplicated. And, as a preferred partner of IFTTT, BSH receives quick and individual support and our technical needs are given a higher priority compared to those of smaller companies.

How many applets are currently available with IFTTT and do you have a favorite?

The list of available IFTTT services currently totals more than 500! Home Connect has 7 different services available – one for each product category, and each service currently offers up to 20 applets created by BSH. Many more have been created and shared by other users, but there is no limit to your creativity. Here’s one of our favorite examples at BSH. You can use IFTTT to tell your Home Connect fitted oven to turn off as soon as you leave the house, or connect your Nest smoke alarm with your oven so that if the alarm goes off, the oven turns off. My personal favorites include, the applet which turns on the ambient light on your cooking hood every time your favorite team plays a game! It’s just perfect for setting the mood ahead of every FC Bayern game. I also really like the applet that logs your coffee consumption in a Google spreadsheet with the help of your Home Connect fitted coffee machine.

All that’s left to do is head over to the IFTTT website or app (available on iOS and Android) and start trying out the applets for yourself! Have fun!
